Long ago, in the late 90's I think, my friend Kevin and I got Megaman 6 for the NES out of sheer boredom. I spent the night at his house and we beat the game over the course of 3 to 5 hours. We had fun! This game was also special to me because, much like Megaman 2 for the Gameboy, it was one of the few Megaman games I ever played all of the way through. So revisiting this game as an adult felt refreshing. Allow me finish my thoughts on the last game in the Legacy Collection:
- This might be the easiest Megaman game in the classic series. Any boos is a candidate for "first in weakness order". We have come a long way from Elecman who can kill you in three hits or Woodman, whose strategy is to just cover the screen in projectiles that require a Pyrrhic victory without pixel perfect dodging.
- As a kid, the Rush Jet Adapter was one of the "coolest" additions to the entire series to me. It is still "cool" and useful, but it is unfortunate that it never once becomes useful against a boss.
- It has been six games now but it is high time I made this complaint: Why can't Megaman shoot "up". I get mechanically why he cannot, but even Samus in Metroid (1988) could shoot up just fine.
On that last note, I enjoyed this last name, but really only because it makes me feel like a kid. It is, again, not a bad game and not great game. I am glad I finally made my way through the whole NES classic series. If I can be honest, though, what I've learned is that these games do not have amazing level design. These games are to Capcom what Assassins Creed was (is?) to Ubisoft. Find a successful property and make a sequel every single year until it gets old.
The have a fun hook, but perhaps they are not for me. I was honestly considering buying the Megamna Legacy Collection 2 just to round out the series, but mayube another time. Honestly it would be more fair of me to do so one day, since later generation games likely fixed a lot of issues and they were't pumped out in six years.
